Centrica, Edinburgh

Brise Soleil perfected by the wind.

Optically stunning and safe, this is façade technology at its toughest.
A GIG project that defies wind and weather. The call center for Scottish Gas.

The first project to be completed at a new Technology Centre in Edinburgh was the Centrica Building, which serves as a call center for Scottish Gas. Following a short tender period, GIG was awarded the design, manufacture and installation of the complete external envelope consisting of the façade construction, brise soleil system, cladding for the underground car park and, also to the plantroom on the roof. The project included the mullion-transom curtain wall suspended over 3 storeys, sun protection system as well as numerous large-scale louvre, glass, and panel claddings. The main challenge was that the large façades of the building, especially the sun protection, were exposed to strong Scottish winds. GIG solved this problem with a special construction tested in a wind tunnel, enabling secure attachment of the very light sun protection structure, fixed only every 4.5 metres, to provide shading. By solving this issue, GIG once again proved to be a skilled partner for its British clients.
