Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Newcastle
280 miles north of London
280 miles north of London there is another Millennium Bridge – over the River Tyne between Gateshead and Newcastle.
The bridge has a span which amounts to 105 metres. The bridge swings open when needed and is intended for pedestrians only.
On top of heavy wedge-shaped boxes on both embankments two lightweight transparent pavilions are situated, which GIG created entirely of clear glass, including the fins that support the walls and roofs.
Strolling into the 21st Century – Gateshead Millennium Bridge. A project that brings people together, using glass pavilions from GIG.
A prize-winning giant “eye”. An eye-catching performance by GIG.
The Millennium Bridge linking Gateshead and Newcastle arches over the River Tyne is spectacular. For anyone watching the way in which the bridge moves it provides a genuine spectacle. The pedestrian bridge pivots via hydraulic cylinders to allow larger ships to pass through. GIG was commissioned to provide two covered entry and exit pavilions on the river promenades. The conical glass structures are divided into ten sections over a length of nearly 20 metres.
The uniqueness of this project:
The supporting structure, made entirely of glass stabilizers and beams, except for the stainless steel point holders.
A sliding door serves as the entrance at the larger end. The pavilions are made of single-pane safety glass with screen printing in the roof to prevent excessive interior heating. The Gateshead project has received numerous awards.
