WU LLC & W1D, Vienna

Learning & Library Center (LLC) and Administration Building (W1D)

When a dream takes real shape.

The more special, the more GIG, is a truism clearly demonstrated by the Learning & Library Centre (LLC) and W1D Administrative Building of the new University of Economics and Business in Vienna.

At this project we have demonstrated the interaction between outstanding architecture and brilliant realization.
The LLC, which was designed by Zaha Hadid, forms the centerpiece of the roughly 90,000 m2 campus. The two intertwining structures enable the recognition of the main zones of the building, as the public areas are coloured grey and those off-limits are white.
Curved and bent constructions were required, with a 35° overhang extending 16 metres and inclined up to 10° inward, along with a variety of three-dimensionally shaped and bent sheets and louvres.
The façade of the main administrative building (W1D) was equally challenging. The elongated, bizarre building stretches across the university campus like a snake. Both projects presented an unprecedented, exceptionally exciting challenge for our manufacturing, which was solved with confidence and expertise.

However, a construction period of only two years demanded an extreme effort in many respects. At peak times, up to 30 engineers and technicians from GIG were involved in the planning, and up to 100 employees were on-site executing the installation. The effort paid off: All specifications and ideas of the architects were perfectly executed, turning a dream into reality.
